New third-party certification option verifies compact-design claims for cleaning, laundry and personal care.
August 25, 2026
By: Melissa Meisel
NSF launched NSF Certified Compact Product, which the organization says is the first independent standard verifying a product was “genuinely engineered to use less material and ship more.”
Products carrying Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly badge, which NSF Certified Compact Product is now compatible with, have driven 100 million instances of shoppers switching to certified alternatives, according to NSF.
The certification applies across a range of product categories where compact design can significantly reduce material use and shipping impacts, said the organization.
Initially, manufacturers of cleaning agents, laundry and personal care products as well as skin cleaners and moisturizers in compact formats (tablets, bars and sticks) are eligible to apply. NSF will regularly review standard criteria and evaluate candidates for format expansion while adapting to new product innovation. Certified products will display the NSF Certified Compact Product mark and be listed on NSF’s online directory.
“As regulations around environmental claims tighten, independent verification is becoming essential, as regulators increasingly expect green design elements to be substantiated and third-party verified rather than self-declared,” said Jess Evans, director of food advisory at NSF. “NSF Certified Compact Product gives companies a science-backed way to substantiate their compact-design claims, backed by a rigorous, defined standard.”
The certification evaluates products using ISO-aligned Life Cycle Assessment methods and verifies measurable reductions in material use compared to conventional products. It focuses on optimizing mass per use, material intensity and transportation impact “without compromising safety or functionality,” said NSF.
The program also requires certified products to maintain documented social and labor policies demonstrating respect for human rights and responsible workplace practices across operations and supply chains.
“Third-party certification represents the gold standard for environmental claims verification,” Evans added. “By helping validate the impact of their innovative work, we empower companies to demonstrate their leadership in sustainability and build consumer trust.”
NSF’s Certified Compact Product will be one of the third-party sustainability certifications part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge Friendly (CPF) program, helping customers more easily identify products with verified sustainability features.
NSF was founded in 1944 as the National Sanitation Foundation to help standardize sanitation and food safety at a time when the US had no national sanitation standards. As NSF expanded services beyond sanitation and became a global public health and safety organization, it changed its name to NSF in 1990.
NSF has more than 140 currently active public health standards and independent testing protocols.
